All Three B.J.S. Cahill Collections at
University of California, Berkeley
(plus singles)

(Online "Pathfinder Catalog" search listing
as found and re-grouped by Gene Keyes)

2009-03-07

Notes:

B.J.S. Cahill archive collections are in three locations on the University of California Berkeley campus. As abbreviated in the listings below, "BANC" is Bancroft Library, which has two separate collections in two different rooms: one is mostly maps; the other, mostly papers. "CEDA" is Environmental Design Archives, College of Environmental Design, containing mostly non-map architectural work of Cahill, but some map-related materials as well.

("EART" is "Earth Sciences & Map Library, McCone Hall", but that only has a few singles.)

CEDA has an online finder's aid, but Bancroft does not; so I have digitized the typed index of Bancroft's Cahill map collection, and posted it here.

I had perused these collections in person in 1983 (pre-Internet!), but have not been back since then. Living in Nova Scotia on the opposite coast from Berkeley, I did a new Cahill search, using the University of California's online "Pathfinder Catalog", in March 2009.

"Pathfinder" was  difficult to use: e.g., the fullest results (nine) come from entering "Cahill, Bernard" as an author search, but none from "Cahill, B.J.S.", and only three appear if you seek "Cahill butterfly map" as title key words. "Butterfly map" as a subject turns up seven (including my own "Cahill-Keyes" map despite its lack of the word "butterfly"), whereas "Cahill butterfly map" as s subject gets nothing.

It does not reload the enormous URL of your session, which has timed out if you try to return to it. (All the collection-links below have expired for the same reason, but you can get their slightly more detailed listings by using the  "Pathfinder Catalog" link and re-entering the search terms as given above.)

While Pathfinder conveniently can send you an e-mail of your search results, it is not formatted nearly as well as the original; so instead, I have directly copied them here in lieu of the e-mail version, and done some tidying and re-arranging.

Cahill's actual birth date is 1866, not 1867 as stated below.

[The three Cahill collections, via "Cahill, Bernard" author query in Pathfinder; to repeat, all its links have timed out, but can be found by repeating the same query above]:
