Note 1: All versions here have exactly the same rhythm, but English lettering takes up more space than the other two.

Note 2: That slightly incestuous verse 6, included here, is omitted from all the recordings I've heard, and most of the English text versions I've seen, except The New Oxford Book of Carols. 

Note 3: "Riu riu chiu" is said to be the call of a nightingale, and/or the call of a shepherd to his sheep, e.g. in a riverside fold. The first line in Spanish is ambiguous, as to whether the riverbank is protecting an (unspecified) nightingale, or a shepherd is protecting his (unspecified) flock at a riverbank. So in both translations, I equivocated a bit in that first line by vaguely referring to a "riverside guardian", while my second line is more accurately done.

Note 4: I have modernized the old Spanish spelling in some instances, but not all. —GK

• Score / Partituro: Anders Sternberg (his and several others are available for free download from the Choral Public Domain Library website, CPDL Also, CPLD's own page on Riu (second link above) has all 7 verses in Spanish, but the English translation misses verse 6, and repeats verse 2.

• Anuna: My favorite; an eight voice Irish male chorus, with a captivating single-drum accompaniment. • Finally, below is a better-than-average MIDI, by "Anonimo" which is nice and slow, and therefore good to practice singing Riu with, compared to how fast most vocal versions are. The melody is actually quite simple, but what makes it tricky — to sing, as well as to arrange this score — is knowing where to put the syllables. In all three of the languages here, at different places, one syllable may stretch over two or three beats, or two syllables will be stuffed into one note.
